Prosecute parents of cyberbullies?

I was just reading about a proposed law in Rhode Island that would prosecute parents of cyberbullies who send messages that prove disruptive at school: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-cyberbullyingsep14,1,3035863.story

I'm sure the law will be challenged on free-speech grounds, if it’s even passed. The article also talks about how schools are continuing to put tough (and controversial) rules in place to combat cyberbullying, and how a lot of the rules are being challenged by parents and free-speech advocates.

What do you think about laws like the one R.I. is considering? And do you think schools should punish students for online behavior? Tough issues, and I’m curious to hear your opinions.

Wow... this one got me really thinking!

Being an ex-cop I am probably biased, but my feelings are that once a parent has been advised about the issues or problems their child is causing and then fails to remedy it they should be liable.

To me it's no different than if my child went and damaged someones car, I'm ultimately responsible for my child's actions.

I think it would be good if the parent's know that thier kids are doing it. But, I'm sure the ACLU will get involved in any case that went before a case in court if it ever became a law. Therefore, you have the whole stop gap mesure of the law. It will go no where. I'm sure the law makers know this. Anyway, they want to get re-elected and a lot of those parents are voters, and I'm sure they look at that too. I'm sorry but I live in Gettysburg, and here our legislators only vote according to the people who care about the battlegrounds. They don't even realize that we have any problems. I have gone to them about things like this, and other things and they know nothing about it. They didn't even know we don't have any form of public transportation here. They had nerve enough to tell me, a disabled person to take a taxi! I informed them we haven't had one of those for over two years. They were shocked. I was speaking to them about single, and abused mothers with children at the time. So, about the Prosecute parents in RI, that's a pretty, how should I put this, upscaled state. More closed knit then Getty so the chances of that law passing are pretty thin. But, if it does I would try to stand up and cheer. It's about time someone did something about kids being bullied in anyway!
