I'm not sure where to place this, or whether or not its appropriate. However, I felt the need to share, especially this little gem. Based on Ubuntu Linux, this is an Operating System for children aged 3-12 years of age. It provides a lot of educational games, and requires no Internet Connection to use. Check out the What Is page, as well as the FAQ. http://www.qimo4kids.com If this post is in the wrong section, please redirect or I can create a new one.

Hey Anne, They bill the OS as being for " Children " ages 3 to 12. The way the Operating System is set up, it doesn't require " Internet Connection " to function at all. You can install this Operating System on a computer or run the " Live " version without installing it to the computer, and allow your children to use it. What it provides is a safer operating system for children to use that is impervious to Windows based virus', trojans, etc due to it being based on the Linux Operating System. Also, because the educational software doesn't require Internet access to function you don't have to allow your children on the Internet. You'll find more information on the site than from me. I discovered it today myself and haven't tested it or played with it.

Interesting you call it an "OS for kids," LordSoulFire. I've never heard that term before, and it is an interesting one. Is it like what has been called a "walled garden" or "safe playground" using Net technology but walled off from the rest of the Web? If not, I'd be curious to know how it's different from that.
The first one I can remember is JuniorNet, created in the Boston area, back in Web 1.0 days. Not a kids' browser like Kidzui but a walled garden with no ads – subscription only. Licensed content from all kinds of cool kids' brands on TV. Then there was the Children's Internet and one out of L.A. by Passport Media whose name I can't remember (about the same time as JuniorNet but going with ads and no subscription model). None of them have lasted very long, partly because of the first dot-com meltdown and I think partly because kids have to be pretty little to not care about being walled in. Great for parental peace of mind, but kids have to like it too. Always that dilemma, I think. Would be interested in your thoughts. Best,
Anne
