Cell and Computer protecting software

i posted this in another forum and realized that this may be the best place for the post, so I'm just reposting it..

I have two daughters, 17 and 12. The oldest has a cell phone and the youngest is begging for hers now. They both use a computer that is in our living room, but it's becoming difficult for them to share with all of the school work that requires computer time. My husband and I have been very reluctant to get them laptops because we feel we lose a little control with the portability. As if the concerns of online predators, porn and inappropriate material on their computer isn't enough, we've got the same concerns on my oldest's cell phone. She spends more time texting and getting on her facebook page on her phone than she does talking on it. Texting and driving has become a HUGE concern for us.

A friend turned me on to a software that monitors all of this stuff on my kids cell phone and computer. It monitors chat rooms, facebook and email for talk about sex, drugs, cyberbullying or other inappropriate language. It sends us an alert if anything looks suspicious. The coolest thing about it is that you can block their ability to text on the phone if they are in a moving car or at school. We've only had it in place for a few weeks, but it's been a big relief to feel like we've finally got at least a little bit of control over what they're doing.

The product is call WebSafety and we ordered it through www.protecting-kids.com I don't want to sound like I'm pitching a product because I have nothing to do with the company, but we've been really happy with the results. I feel a whole lot safer knowing that we have some protection for our kids.

P.S. Because of this software, we finally gave in and got our youngest a cell phone too!

We sat them both down and explained what we were doing. That this wasn't meant to be a "spy" tool, but was meant to keep them safe. My oldest definitely pushed back on blocking texting while driving and during school hours, but that has really validated our belief in how important it is. I have enough worries with her driving right now, this has at least provided some level of assurance that she's not completely distracted behind the wheel.

So far so good! We get a few "alerts" a day through text and email, most of which have been completely harmless. I just think it will be a good way to open dialogue if we do find any concerning content.

Oh yeah, you can also have "safe' people like close friends and family member that it does not monitor. We're still a little skeptical as to whether or not to include her best friends on this list. Since it monitors talk about drugs, suicide and sex, I feel that would go on mostly between friends.

Hope this helps!

Hi and welcome AUMom1, Did you tell your daughters how the software works (and how did that talk go?)? I'm sure people would also be curious to know if your family has different rules for each daughter (since they're at such different ages).

Thanks for sharing your family's story.

Maureen
